The Credentials of the Catholic Church

by Cannon Bagshawe, D.D.

From the Preface:
“I have endeavoured to put forward, as fairly as I can, the grounds of the great claim made by the Catholic Church on the obedience of men. This claim is so remarkable in itself and in its history, and is so important in its consequences, that it at any rate deserves serious consideration. I have called my book the “Credentials” because it treats of the grounds, and proofs, and tokens, which the Church exhibits to the world to establish her claim to be considered as ambassador from God.”  “There must be some such ambassador, or guide, to lead mankind to Divine Revelation; that no body of men, except the Catholic Church, can establish a satisfactory claim to this office, and finally, that the Church can produce “Credentials” sufficient to convince those who are willing to believe on reasonable evidence.”  The author avoids a harsh and bitter tone and treats the non-Catholic reader as a friend and reasonable person, taking for granted that he is willing to give fair consideration to such important issues at hand.

319 pages, PB book. Impr. Cardinal Henry Edward Manning, circa 1880.
