The civilized world owes an immense amount (including its civilization) to St. Benedict, and even if it did not, he would still be a personality of extraordinary fascination. The Dark Ages are now seen to be not the useless, barren, unprofitable time that our father thought them, but literally the necessary seed plot of future flowering, but the period of darkness might have been mere chaos but for St. Benedict.
