Daily Pilgrimage to Purgatory by Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Impr. 1933, 32 page booklet. From the beginning: In the writings of St. Margaret Mary we find the following exhortation: “In union with the divine Heart of Jesus make a short pilgrimage to Purgatory at night. Offer Him all your activities of the day and ask Him to apply His merits to the suffering souls. At the same time, implore them to obtain for you the grace to live and die in the love and friendship of this divine Heart.” With this small booklet, “It is inexhaustible. It implores Our Lord and Savior to apply to them the infinite merits of His life, His Passion and Death, and also those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and all the saints.”

“Punishment is pain justly inflicted in consequence of evil done. It is purely medicinal, if its sole purpose is to bring the evil-doer to repentance and to enable him to undo the evil wrought.”

This book was written to answer the objections which beset many honest minds in regard to eternal punishment. The reader will not only find a clear explanation of Catholic doctrine, but will be pleased to note that the objections against the doctrine of hell are met honestly and with clearness that should be helpful to those wishing to know what the Catholic Church teaches.

This book is divided into two parts, Part I contains, as the title suggests, the explanation of the epistles and gospels. Part II contains instruction on the veneration and invocation of Saints with explanations of the epistles and gospels proper to their feasts. It would be difficult to find a book more suitable for the laity, imparting fuller instruction in faith and morals, or giving more lucid explanations of the ceremonies which the Church employs throughout the Ecclesiastical year. It is no surprise that this Catholic treasure has been warmly recommended over time by many bishops and priests since it first appeared in 1880 to strengthen the Catholic faith, propagate true Christian morality and lead to a better comprehension of the Ecclesiastical year. This work is divided into five parts: The first, Doctrinal and Devotional, comprising extracts from Suarez, St. Catherine of Genoa, St. Augustine, St. Gertrude, St. Francis de Sales, and others. The Second Part consists of Anecdotes and Incidents relating to Purgatory, and more or less authentic. The Third Part contains historical matter bearing on the same subject, including Father Lambing’s valuable article on “ The Belief in a Middle State of Souls after Death amongst Pagan Nations/’ The Fourth Part is made up of “ Thoughts on Purgatory, from Various Authors, Catholic and non-Catholic,” including Cardinals Newman, Wiseman, and Manning; the Anglican Bishops Jeremy Taylor and Reginald Heber, Dr. Samuel Johnson, William Hurrell Mallock, Count de Maistre, Chateaubriand. The Fifth and last part consists of a numerous collection of legends and poems connected with Purgatory.

This work will help to increase devotion to the Suffering Souls, and excite a more tender and more sensible feeling of sympathy for them.
