  • By His Eminence Rodrigue Cardinal Villeneuve.

The treatment of the various feasts and liturgical seasons of the year is brief enough so that all, even the most occupied, can find time to read it and be introduced into the proper spiritual atmosphere for celebrating or attending daily Mass and reciting the divine office according to the mind of the Church. It should be noted that this is not an abridgement, of Butler’s Lives of the Saints. Those who are too busy or have not the opportunity to consult more copious works may find this book of special interest.

  • By Right Reverend J.D. Richards, D.D.

Originally printed by Benziger Brothers in 1884.

A Plain and Brief Statement of the Real Doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, as opposed to those falsely attributed to her, by Christians who reject her authority, and by Unbelievers in Revelations; that thus a contrast may be easily drawn between the “Faith once delivered to the Saints,” and the conflicting theories, and scientific guesses of the present age; and serving as a refutation to the assaults of modern infidelity. From the introduction: I believe that no one of ordinary intelligence and observation will deny that unbelief, the offspring of frivolity and thoughtlessness, is rapidly spreading over the whole civilized world. It is not philosophical and reasoning Infidelity that is causing whole nations, in this nineteenth century, to turn away from God and His Christ and the hopes of Faith, but thoughtless and flippant ridicule of the joys and terrors set before us by revelation. It is utter carelessness and indifference about sacred things that is doing this wide-spread mischief. From the preface: [The] object has been throughout to state the difficulties urged by unbelief against Catholic Christianity plainly and even forcibly - much more forcibly than they have been put to me by travelling companions, and men whom I have met, disposed chiefly to common-sense, and are supported, on account of their simplicity, from hosts of others more suited to the schools.

  • By Fulton J. Sheen, 1948.

The author in this book shows that the Revolution of Communism are on the conscience of the Western world. This book has shocking statements made 67 years ago that have been fulfilled. "The Western world generally has lost the concept of man as a creature made to the image and likeness of God, and reduced him... to a component part of the universe... This distortion of the true nature of man was due principally to the philosophy of historical liberalism, which saw man as endowed with no higher destiny than the economic. There is no word more "dangerous" than liberalism, because to oppose it is a new "unforgivable sin." The book finishes with some upbeat Chapters to include: Our Lady of Fatima and Russia, How to Meet Communism and others. 247 pages.
Here are quotes from the book:
"As Western civilization looses its Christianity it loses its superiority." Preface.
"It is a characteristic of any decaying civilization that the great masses of the people are unconscious of the tragedy. . .Only those who live by faith know what is happening in the world... the great masses without faith are unconscious of the destructive process going on, because they have lost the vision of the heights from which they fallen." p.15
On speaking of antichrist:”The Antichrist will not be so called; otherwise he would have no followers...he will come disguised as the Great Humanitarian; he will talk peace, prosperity and plenty not as means to lead us to God, but as ends in themselves...He will tempt Christian(s) with the same three temptations with which he tempted Christ... He will have one great secret which he will tell to no one: he will not believe in God. Because his religion will be brotherhood without the fatherhood of God, he will deceive even the elect. He will set up a counterchurch ... It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of Antichrist that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. p. 17ff
"Thus does a society which lost its faith in the authority of a Church sneak authority back into society through the door of the counterchurch... Once inner faith is lost, a dictatorship becomes imperative to reestablish some kind of order by force." p. 172

  • Bishop Joseph Angrisani
    Imprimatur, 1954.

Meditations for Every Day on the Scriptural Lessons of the Roman Breviary, in accordance with the Encyclical “Divino Afflante.”
These meditations are for all Catholics, seriously striving after holiness. As fonts of Theology – dogmatic, moral, ascetical and mystical – they are unusually informative! “The method of training surest of results, is meditation. There is no known substitution for it, nor can there be...The soul devoted to daily meditation need never fear failure in his quest for holiness. Meditation keeps feet on the ground and eyes on heaven.”
The extremely important aim of this work, which is the sanctification of the Clergy and laity alike, increases its value and suitableness to the needs of our times. For never before, as in our day, in this period of general disorientation of minds and of most grave threats to the Faith and moral life of the people, has thee been felt the necessity of holy priests and laity who for the salvation of Christian civilization must constitute an impenetrable barrier to the onslaughts of impiety and evil customs. This is a rare work that will be a valuable asset to any library.

    Imprimatur 1896. 424 page book.

The need of a book of this kind is very urgent at the present day, since, in the present circumstances, Catholics are oftentimes exposed to great dangers of neglecting their religious duties.

The reader will find in this volume a clear statement of the teaching of the Church regarding the Holy Sacrifice. He will find an explanation of the nature and the meaning of the Mass - the most acceptable of sacrifices and the most potent of sin-offerings. There are in it correct doctrine, fervent meditation to excite devotion, and useful suggestions as to the best way of hearing Mass.

  • Moral Theology
    A Complete Course
Based on St. Thomas Aquinas and the Best Modern Authorities.
    2 Volume Set

By John A. McHugh, O.P. and Charles J. Callan, O.P.

    Imprimatur, 1929.

The purpose of the present work is to give a complete and comprehensive treatise on Catholic Moral Theology, that is, on that branch of sacred learning which treats of the regulation of human conduct in the light of reason and revealed truth. This new work strives to deal with the subject as a systematic and orderly whole, and is based throughout on the principles, teaching and method of St. Thomas Aquinas, while supplementing that great Doctor of the Church from the best modern authorities. Needless to say, there are many questions and problems connected with modern life that did not exist when the great classic works on Moral Theology were written, and to these naturally special attention has been given in the treatment that follows. Volume 1 - 691 pages, Volume 2- 802 pages.

  • Sacristan’s duties are made much harder by the fact that he is not quite sure of what is wanted of him on certain occasions. This is especially the case at times like Holy Week, when a great many preparations have to be made for unusual ceremonies. The Sacristan who takes an intelligent interest in his work will want to know something of the various articles that he daily handles, their proper and correct shape and size and form; he will want to know something of the ceremonies for which he has to prepare; he will want to know how best to order and arrange his sacristies; he may even at times be asked to give advice to the Altar Societies that give so much of their time and energy to the service of the altar. It should be made quite clear at the outset that this book is intended for use chiefly in parochial or non-cathedral churches. Consequently such ceremonies only are considered as may take place outside a cathedral.

  • Textual Concordance of the Holy Scriptures

Arranged Especially for Use in Preaching. By Rev. Thomas David Williams

    Imprimatur, 1908.

    From the preface:
[Pope] Leo XIII, in his encyclical, Providentissimus Deus, on the study of Holy Scripture, speaking of the life and power that the frequent use of the Sacred Text gives to the utterances of the preacher of the Divine Word, adds: “And it is this peculiar and singular power of Holy Scripture, arising from the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, which gives authority to the sacred orator, fills him with apostolic liberty of speech, and communicated force and power to his eloquence. For those who infuse into their efforts the spirit and strength of the Word of God speak not in word only, but in power also, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much fulness. Hence, those preachers are foolish and improvident who, in speaking of religion and proclaiming the things of God, use no words but those of human science and human prudence, trusting to their own reasonings rather than to those of God. Their discourses may be brilliant and fine, but they must be feeble and they must be cold, for they are without the fire of the utterance of God, and they must fall short of that mighty power which the speech of God possesses.”
To Give this power, and to place at more ready disposal the treasures of this sacred mine, the present work has been compiled, and is now offered. This work is a textual concordance of Holy Scripture, arranged especially for use in preaching.
It follows simply the alphabetical order of subjects; and is divided into two parts or books, moral and dogmatic; to which is added an appendix containing principally the miracles, prophecies, and parables of Christ.

  • by Cannon Bagshawe, D.D.

    From the Preface:
“I have endeavoured to put forward, as fairly as I can, the grounds of the great claim made by the Catholic Church on the obedience of men. This claim is so remarkable in itself and in its history, and is so important in its consequences, that it at any rate deserves serious consideration. I have called my book the “Credentials” because it treats of the grounds, and proofs, and tokens, which the Church exhibits to the world to establish her claim to be considered as ambassador from God.”  “There must be some such ambassador, or guide, to lead mankind to Divine Revelation; that no body of men, except the Catholic Church, can establish a satisfactory claim to this office, and finally, that the Church can produce “Credentials” sufficient to convince those who are willing to believe on reasonable evidence.”  The author avoids a harsh and bitter tone and treats the non-Catholic reader as a friend and reasonable person, taking for granted that he is willing to give fair consideration to such important issues at hand.

  • The compilation of this Divine Armory of Holy Scripture was suggested by a small volume which first appeared two hundred years ago, entitles “Theologia Scripturea Divinae,” auctore Henrico Marcellio, S.J.; and upon the idea and plan of that work it is to some extent based. But it has been so greatly amplified that it may be regarded as in reality a new work, modified in plan, and containing six times as much matter as the original. That this collection of biblical texts may help to show forth more clearly the scriptural character of the teaching and liturgy of Holy Church, and that it may increase in those who use it a knowledge and love of the Sacred Writing from which it is compiled, is the earnest hope and prayer of the compiler.
